What's popular at Mobile World Congress [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]

(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Siti Syameen Md Khalili highlights five of the most talked-about gadgets at MWC 2014.

New Yota 1. The second generation YotaPhone (also known as YotaPhone 2) features dual displays - an e-ink display which helps save battery life and a 4.7-inch display with qHD resolution. The Snapdragon 800- based model also features 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, 8MP camera and NFC connectivity. However, this phone will be available only at the end of this year for Russia, Europe, Middle East and African markets. It will hit Asian markets three to four months later.

Quick charge tablet 2. Waterproof, slim and equipped with 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, this tablet's winning quality is that it takes only a short time to fully charge its 6,000mAh lithium polymer battery. On top of that, its 8.1MP rear and 2.2MP front cameras also add appeal. Z2 will be available in March, but the price is not available.

Android and much more 3. Nokia's inevitable move to introduce Android-powered smartphones is still being greeted with a mix of good and bad reviews. That said, the Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL offer the wealth of Android, together with a slew of Nokia native tools such as HERE Maps and MixRadio. Most affordable of the lot is Nokia X, which retails here at RM399, while X+ and XL have yet to arrive but are tagged with a suggested retail price of Euro99 (RM443) and Euro109 respectively.

Fit for purpose 4. While MWC2014 saw many wearables, the Samsung Gear Fit got particular attention. The bracelet-like, dust and water-resistant device offers OLED touch display to show Android notifications and user heart rate. The home screen is customisable while users may also change straps to match their mood. Another plus point is that its 210mAh battery gives about three days of typical usage. Pricing unavailable at Press time.

Mid-tier phablet gets attention 5 While the HTC One bagged the best smartphone award at MWC2014, it was its sister product, the Desire 816, that got many tongues wagging. Positioned as a mid-tier phablet, the device features a 5.5- inch screen, dual-frontal speakers with HTC BoomSound, 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. Within its 165g body is a 1.6GHz quad- core processor. The LTE-enabled product will be available next month and the price is expected to be mid-range.
