Cameron pledges £45m to fund research into internet of things

(City A.M. (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DAVID Cameron pledged yesterday to invest an further £45m on research into new technology that will allow electricity meters to communicate with the grid and water pipes to alert households when there is a fall in pressure.

Opening a technology trade fair in Hanover with German chancellor Angela Merkel, the Prime Minister said the UK and Germany will work together on developing the so-called internet of things, whereby everyday devices - from heart monitors to kitchen appliances - can talk to each other over the internet and make life simpler.

He also announced plans for the UK and Germany to collaborate on the next super-fast broadband 5G.

"We are on the brink of a new industrial revolution and I want us - the UK and Germany - to lead it," Cameron said in his opening speech.

"Take British ingenuity in software, services and design, add German excellence in engineering and industrial manufacturing and together we can lead in this new revolution," he added.
