OKI's Teletype Model 55 Receives Information Processing Technology Heritage Certification in Japan

TOKYO --(Business Wire)--

OKI (News - Alert) Data Corporation, an OKI Group company specializing in the printer business, today announced they have been awarded an "Information Processing Technology Heritage" certification from the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) for their Teletype Model 55. It has been recognized as being of historical value in understanding the technology of the era when it was manufactured.

Developed in 1953 as OKI's first page teletypewriter, Teletype Model 55 is the root of digital printers. Until 1965 the product was widely used by government agencies and financial institutions in Japan as a public communication terminal with printer capability, with its functionality evolving over time. Various efforts were exerted to make this sytem smaller, lighter and easier to operate, which is a valuable example of OKI's commitment to monozukuri.

"We are delighted that our Teletype Model 55 has been recognized by the Information Processing Technology Heritage program for the third consecutive year," Hiroshi Endo, Corporate Officer and Divisional General Manager of Products Business Division at OKI Data. "This product forms the basis of our current product lines. Based on our long experience and extensive achievements, we will continue to design and provide products that contribute to the development of an information society."

The OKI Group received the Information Processing Technology Heritage for its OKITYPER-2000 and OKITAC-4300C System in fiscal year 2008, 2400B-type Line Printer in fiscal year 2009 and Autoteller Terminal AT-20P in fiscal year 2011, Wiredot Printer in fiscal year 2012, making the Teletype Model 55 the sixth product to receive the certification.
