Seniors Can Stay Healthy and Fit With Free Programs Offered by SCAN Health Plan Arizona in April
PHOENIX --(Business Wire)--
Seniors have an opportunity to stay healthy and fit by improving their
nutrition knowledge and practicing a variety of ways to stay in shape by
participating in free wellness classes and presentations offered by SCAN
Health Plan Arizona.
All events are free and open to SCAN members as well as the general
public; however, space is limited, so pre-registration is required.

The following classes will take place at the SCAN Health Education
Center at 1400 East Southern Avenue, Suite 735, in Tempe.
"Senior Medicare Patrol - Fraud, Identity Theft and Medicare,"
will be held on Tuesday, April 1, from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. During this
workshop participants will learn how to protect themselves from scams
that target Medicare beneficiaries like fraud and identity theft.
On Tuesday, April 8, from 9 - 10:30 a.m., seniors are invited to attend
a "Heart Health Presentation and Doc Talk" during which they can
learn about the seven most important steps to a healthier heart.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss heart-related
questions and concerns with a doctor.
The "Diabetes Self-Management Workshop" is being offered on three
Tuesdays this month: April 15, 22 and 29 from 9 - 11:30 a.m. This
six-week workshop uses interaction, goal setting, problem solving and
action planning to help participants gain the necessary skills to manage
Because accidental falls can tur into serious injuries for seniors, the
"Matter of Balance" workshop is a must for seniors who want to
learn skills to avoid falls. The series begins on Tuesday, April 15,
from 1 - 3:30 p.m. and continues each Tuesday at the same time for eight
Exercise classes offered by SCAN provide participants with an
opportunity to increase their skill, balance and endurance in a
supportive and social environment. Classes include:
Tai Chi & Qigong - A form of moving energy derived from
Chinese martial arts. It consists of a series of slow, fluid movements
done softly and gently using breathing techniques for healthy
biorhythms. Held every Wednesday from 9 - 10 a.m.
Yoga for Every Body - A gentle yoga class specifically helpful
for seniors with movement disorders. Participants will develop an
overall sense of well-being, improved mobility and confidence. Held
every Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Zumba Plus - A Latin-inspired dance and fitness class for those
50 plus. Held every Thursday from 10:45 - 11:45 a.m.
A healthy cooking demonstration featuring foods that support
"healthy habits" like physical activity will be held on April 16 from
10:30 a.m. to noon.
One of the hottest topics in nutrition is determining the best vitamins
and minerals to supplement good health. On Wednesday, April 9, from
10:30 - 11:30 a.m., SCAN will offer "Vitamins and Supplements,"
which will provide the best recommendations for seniors to both improve
their health and help them to save money by avoiding unnecessary
Feng Shui, a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing the human
existence with the surrounding environment, will be explained during the
"Feng Shui Workshop," which is being offered on Wednesday, April
23, from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to enhance
their homes, prosperity, relationships and health by using the
principles of this 3,000-year-old philosophy.
"Cancer Awareness," a presentation about the prevention,
symptoms and treatment of cancer, will be offered on Tuesday, April 22,
from 11 a.m. to noon. It will be held at the Medicare Health Benefits
Resource Center, 2716 South 6th Ave., in Tucson.
"No More Medicine Mayhem" is a free presentation about the
different types of medicines, how to use medicines safely, and useful
tips. It will be held on Wednesday, April 23, at the Freedom Community
Senior Center, 5000 East 29th Street, in Tucson.
