NCKU Research Team Develops Orchid Facial Care Products

TAINAN, Taiwan --(Business Wire)--

With its elegant aroma and especially its reparative and protective properties, Orchid flowers are ideal materials for developing cosmetics, revealed National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Research Center of Orchid whose research results have extended to Lan-Hui Biotech.

The R&D research team of Lan Hui Biotech led by NCKU Professor Hong-Hwa Chen from the Department of Life Sciences has developed "orchid embryonin" extracted from orchid embryo.

"The powder-like orchid seeds, with the size of only 1 mm, are the origin of orchids," according to Dr. Yu-Tun Hsiao from NCKU Researh Center of Orchid.

"It takes 3 years for seeds to grow into strong plants and bloom beautiful flowers," noted Hsiao.

The new orchid breed called Venus had made its grand debut at 2013 NCKU anniversary orchid show.

Venus, the new breed of Phalaenopsis, is crowned for its sweet aroma and elegant figure, not only is it the perfect decoration for home life, it is also the most important plant in pioneering orchid biotechnology products.

Cooperating with National Cheng Kung University - Orchid R&D center, Lan-Hui Biotech collected orchid embryos (protocorms) in specific developmental stages, and confirmed functions of orchid embryonin via microarray.

"We extracted orchid embryonin with unique techniques and found that orchid embryonin can stimulate cellular fertility, revitalize and strengthen skin," said Hsiao.

She noted that orchid embryonin also has anti-oxidant and skin-renewing properties.

NCKU Research Center of Orchid establishes Lan-Hui Biotech to create orchid products based on the past ten years of orchid research findings.
