SPIE Announces 2014 Award Winners

Each year SPIE recognizes outstanding achievements through its awards program. The Awards Committee is pleased to announce the 2014 SPIE Award recipients.
SPIE presents several yearly awards that recognize outstanding individual and team technical accomplishments and meritorious service to the Society. SPIE urges you to nominate a colleague for his or her outstanding achievements. Gold Medal of the Society
James Harrington, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the Gold Medal Award in recognition of his seminal contributions to the field of specialty fiber optics and his pioneering work in the development of infrared transmissive fiber optics and their applications in laser power delivery, chemical and thermal sensing, and spectroscopy. The Gold Medal of the Society is the highest honor bestowed by SPIE. Beginning in 1977, it has been awarded annually in recognition of outstanding engineering or scientific accomplishments in optics, electro-optics, or photographic technologies or applications. Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award
Brian Wilson, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Toronto, Canada, is the 2014 recipient of the SPIE Britton Chance Biomedical Award. SPIE presents this award in recognition of his many contributions to biomedical optics over the past 30 years, including his pioneering work in photodynamic therapy (PDT). The Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of biomedical optics through the development of innovative, high-impact technologies. The award particularly honors pioneering contributions to optical methods and devices that have significant promise to accelerate or have already facilitated advances in biology or medicine. The award targets achievements that span disciplines and may include elements of basic research, technology development, and clinical translation. Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award
Naomi Halas, Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the SPIE Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award. SPIE presents this award in recognition of her invention of biocompatible nanoparticles and their innovative applications in imaging, diagnostics, and photothermal cancer therapy. The Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award is presented annually for extraordinary achievements in biophotonics technology development that show strong promise or potential impact in biology, medicine, and biomedical optics. The award targets achievements that span disciplines and may include elements of basic research, technology development, and clinical translation. A.E. Conrady Award
Matthew Rimmer, retired, Optical Research Associates, Pasadena, California, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the A.E. Conrady Award in recognition of his contributions to optical design algorithm development as exemplified by his work in the area of wavefront differential tolerancing. The A. E. Conrady Award is given annually in recognition of exceptional contributions in design, construction, and testing of optical systems and instrumentation. The recognition of this award is based on developments of new equipment, techniques, and applications for designing, testing, analyzing, and/or evaluating optical systems, components, and theories. Harold E. Edgerton Award
Jeff Squier, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the Harold E. Edgerton Award in recognition of his seminal contributions to femtosecond lasers and amplifiers, laser filamentation, ultrafast spectroscopy, femtosecond micromachining, ophthalmic procedures with ultrafast lasers, and high-speed nonlinear optical microscopy. The Harold E. Edgerton Award is presented annually for outstanding contributions to optical or photonic techniques in the application and understanding of high speed physical phenomena. The development of new technologies and the new application of existing technologies shall be considered in the determination of the award. Dennis Gabor Award
Pramod Rastogi, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is the 2014 winner of the Dennis Gabor award in recognition of his groundbreaking research in the development of high resolution and multi-component parametric phase formulation methods for the simultaneous estimation of multiple phases and their derivatives from holographic interference patterns. The Dennis Gabor award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in diffractive wavefront technologies, especially those which further the development of holography and metrology applications. George W. Goddard Award
James Bock, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the George W. Goddard Award in recognition of his development of sensitive bolometer arrays for studies of distant, dusty galaxies and the cosmic microwave background radiation, leading to their use on the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) on the Herschel Space Telescope and the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) on the Planck Surveyor spacecraft. The George W. Goddard Award is presented annually in recognition of exceptional achievement in optical or photonic instrumentation for aerospace, atmospheric science, or astronomy. The award is for the invention and development of a new technique, photonic instrumentation, instrument, or system. G.G. Stokes Award
J. Scott Tyo, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the G.G. Stokes Award in recognition of his contributions to the theory of polarimeter optimization, the characterization and calibration of polarimeters, and to the understanding of microgrid polarimeter data processing. The G.G. Stokes Award is given annually for exceptional contribution to the field of optical polarization. The award may be presented for a specific achievement, development, or invention of significant importance to optical science and society, or may be given for lifetime achievement. Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology
Rajpal Sirohi, Tezpur University, Tezpur, Assam, India, is the 2014 recipient of the Chandra S. Vikram award in recognition of his important contributions to applied optics and his many international activities to spread his knowledge. The Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology is given annually for exceptional contribution to the field of optical metrology. The award may be presented for a specific achievement, development, or invention of significant importance to optical metrology, or may be given for lifetime achievement. Frits Zernike Award in Microlithography
Mordechai Rothschild, Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Lab, Lexington, Massachusetts, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the Frits Zernike Award in Microlithography in recognition of his leadership in programs that have enabled the advancement of nanolithography in the deep-UV (248nm and 193nm) and the vacuum-UV (157nm and 121nm). The Frits Zernike Award is given for outstanding accomplishments in microlithographic technology, especially those furthering the development of semiconductor lithographic imaging solutions. SPIE Early Career Achievement Award
Jeremy Munday, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, is the 2014 recipient of the Early Career Achievement Award in recognition his innovative experimental and theoretical work on photonic engineering for solar energy devices and Casimir forces. The SPIE Early Career Achievement Award, given for the first time in 2008, goes to an early career professional in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to any of the engineering or scientific fields of interests to SPIE. SPIE Educator Award
Cristina Solano, Centro de Investigaciones en Optica (CIO), A.C., in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, is the 2014 Educator Award winner in recognition of her outstanding contributions in optics education and outreach, and for her valuable outreach activities for extending the knowledge of science both in general and in optics in particular for children and teenagers. The SPIE Educator Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to optics education by an SPIE instructor or an educator in the field. SPIE Technology Achievement Award
Rajendra Singh, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA, is the 2014 recipient of the Technology Achievement award in recognition of his efforts in the elucidation and exploitation of photonic effects in rapid thermal processing for semiconductor manufacturing, and his technical leadership of photovoltaic technology. The SPIE Technology Achievement award is awarded annually to recognize outstanding technical accomplishment in optics, electro-optics, photonic engineering, or imaging. The recipient(s) shall have contributed significantly to the advancement of one or more of these areas with specific demonstration(s) or application(s).
