SAN ANTONIO --(Business Wire)--

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has named Sarandeep Huja, D.D.S., Ph.D., Professor and Division Chief of Orthodontics at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in Lexington, KY, the first ADEA/ADEAGies Foundation Drs. Connie L. and Richard R. Drisko Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute. The Drisko Scholarship provides the opportunity annually for a mid-career dental school faculty member who has shown evidence of leadership potential to participate in the ADEA Leadership Institute. Funding for the scholarship is provided through the generosity of Drs. Drisko. ADEA presented Dr. Huja the award on March 17 at the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Antonio, TX.

Dr. Huja initially received his dental and orthodontic training from India. From 1993-2001, he was associated with three U.S. institutions, receiving his M.S. in 1995 from Marquette University in Milwaukee, his Ph.D. and Orthodontic Certificate in 1999 from Indiana University (News - Alert) and his DDS in 2001 from University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry. His research seeks to understand bone remodeling and adaptation to physical forces. His clinical interests include skeletal anchorage, biomechanics of tooth movement and an interdisciplinary focus to treating patients with compromised malocclusions. He is an Orthodontic consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation and serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Angle Orthodontist, American Journal of Orthodontics and Journal of Dental Biomechanics. Dr. Huja is a member of the Angle Society and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He also maintains an intramural faculty practice. As the recipient of the scholarship, Dr. Huja will receive an award of $10,000 to defray tuition and fees in the ADEA Leadership Institute, with the goal of preparing for a leadership position in an academic dental institution.


The scholarship honors Dr. Connie and her husband Dr. Richard Drisko. Connie Drisko, D.D.S., was Dean and Merritt Professor at the Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine from 2003 through June of 2013. She is a well-known and highly respected dental educator, researcher, and administrator. She has held many other leadership positions in her distinguished career, including serving as Chair and Professor of the Department of Periodontology, Endodontics, and Dental Hygiene and Associate Dean of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Richard Drisko, D.D.S., served his career as a highly regarded dentist and educator in the Veterans' Administration.
