Simi Valley Councilman Steve Sojka arrested in DUI [Ventura County Star, Calif. :: ]
(Ventura County Star (CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 23--Simi Valley City Council member Steve Sojka was arrested recently in Los Angeles County on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Sojka was arrested March 12 by El Segundo police.
According to department records, Sojka, 49, was arrested at 12:11 a.m. and booked at 12:19 a.m.
His bail was set at $5,000 and Sojka was released at 8:12 a.m., according to department records.
He was accused of misdemeanor DUI, according to the department. El Segundo police could not provide further information about the case.
Sojka's lawyer, George Bird, a criminal law specialist with the Torrance-based firm Bird & Bird, made a statement on his client's behalf.
"Steve is disappointed that his conduct led to his arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. We have not received the police reports yet, so we are not able to comment on all of the facts," Bird said. "This was purely private conduct and not related to his work as a City Council member."
Sojka is due in court June 17 for the misdemeanor charge, his lawyer said.
Asked if he was Sojka's long-term attorney, Bird said, "I'm handling this one matter, as he's never been in any court before."
A message for Simi Valley Mayor Robert Huber was not returned.
Sojka has been a member of the council since 1998 and was last re-elected in November 2012, finishing first among seven candidates for two seats. Sojka ran for mayor in 2010 and was defeated by Huber.
Sojka is a member of the Ventura County Transportation Commission and has listed his occupation as owner of a direct-mail advertising business.
