18th Street Arts Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary Year by Embracing Community Through Crowd-Sourcing Initiative

SANTA MONICA, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

18th Street Arts Center (18SAC) proudly announces its 25th Anniversary year with an innovative community-driven initiative aimed at bringing together the many talented and diverse artists and supporters who have defined 18SAC through the years. True to its core value of letting the artists lead, 18SAC is inviting its artist alumni to contribute to the development of our 25th Anniversary commemorative events and catalogue by recommending key historical content and artists to highlight via a cross-platform crowd-sourcing initiative to be launched at the beginning of April. During this milestone year, 18SAC will be hosting a variety of programs, events, and conversations that will be activated through community engagement during live events at the Center and in the digital space with open discussion forums hosted on 18SAC's various social media platforms including Facebook (News - Alert), Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube.

Founded in 1988, by artists Sue Dakin, Linda Burnham, and Steven Durland, 18SAC has evolved from its humble beginnings as a complex of artist live-work spaces to the largest and longest running artist residency center in Southern California. In keeping with 18SAC's legacy as a grass-roots organization created by artists for the support and creative nourishment of other artists, it is fitting that in this year of commemoration 18SAC focuses its attention on its artist alumni and supporters, entreating them to help deepen and expand the official histories of the organization.

18SAC Executive Director Jan Williamson says, "We realize that there are multiple histories of 18SAC embedded among our thousands of artist alumni circling the globe from LA and beyond, and we want to rediscover and celebrate them throughout this whole year."

Alumni of 18SAC residency program include internationally-recognized artists like: Lita Albuquerque, Alex Donis, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, Dan Kwong, Suzanne Lacy and Keith Antar Mason. Additionally, in the early years of the organization, 18SAC incubated several important arts organizations that have gone on to define the arts ecosystem of Los Angeles including: Community Arts Resources: CARS, Cornerstone Theater Group, Side Street Projects and EZTV and Highways Performance Space which both still operate from 18SAC's campus.

During the fall of 2014, 18SAC will synthesize these community and artist-driven programs to produce a 25th Anniversary celebration event that will honor and serve as a homecoming reunion for the artists, supporters, and friends who have shaped and maintained 18SAC as a haven, laboratory, and vital support system for so many local, national, and international artists over the last 25 years.
