Craig Brewer named new president of Indie board; screening committee members sought [The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn. :: ]

(Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 21--Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer is the new president of the board of Indie Memphis, the nonprofit arts organization best known for the annual Indie Memphis Film Festival, set this year for Oct. 30-Nov. 2 at venues in and near Overton Square.

"I am honored to be president of an organization that has been my passion for more than a decade," said Brewer, 42, whose made-in-Memphis shoestring-budget debut feature, "The Poor & Hungry," won the Best Narrative Feature award at the 2000 festival, when the event still was known as the Indie Memphis Delta Film Showcase.

The festival "is where my career began," said Brewer, who currently divides his time between Memphis and Los Angeles, where he currently is writing a pair of pilots for Paramount television. "More importantly, it's where I've met all of my closest friends." Other new officers elected during a Wednesday night meeting to two-year terms on the Indie Memphis board of directors include vice president Kerry Hayes, former special assistant to Mayor A C Wharton who now works at ad firm Doug Carpenter & Associates, and secretary Erin Freeman, a film producer. Les Edwards, a longtime contract financial officer and consultant, continues as treasurer.

Also, Indie Memphis currently is seeking new volunteers for the screening committee for the 2014 festival. Screening committee members watch the films submitted in to the festival, and help determine if the films are worthy of being accepted. An application can be found at indiememphis.com.
