Farmington board elects officers, joins Chamber of Commerce [Sun Journal, Lewiston, Maine :: ]

(Sun Journal (Lewiston, ME) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 28--FARMINGTON -- The Board of Selectmen will be a four-member board until June with the resignation of Andrew Hufnagel on March 26.

Nomination papers for a two-year term are available at the Town Office and must be returned to Town Clerk Leanne Pinkham by April 30. An election will be held in June.

The two-year position will complete the three-year term of Hufnagel, who resigned in February for personal reasons.

The board elected officers Tuesday, the first meeting after Monday's election and town meeting.

Ryan Morgan was re-elected chairman; Joshua Bell was elected vice chairman and Stephan Bunker will serve as secretary.

In other business Tuesday, the board unanimously authorized a municipal membership in the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. Funding for the chamber in the amount of $2,500 will be taken from the Franklin Printing Municipal Development Tax Increment Financing District.

Of nearly 200 chamber members across the county, 102 are Farmington-based businesses, nonprofits and organizations, Chamber President Michael Blanchet told the board.

He said the chamber has a new website that is more compatible with mobile units, including smartphones.

The $2,500 from the town will help with the Chester Greenwood Day parade, an event that brings the town international publicity and recognition, Blanchet said.

The TIF district allows the use of money for membership in such things as the chamber and the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

When the town did not achieve state Business-Friendly status, one suggestion was membership in the chamber, he said.

The board also approved the Farmington Downtown Association's request to use Meetinghouse Park and to close Broadway for activities during the Farmington Midsummer Festival.

Representing the Association, Gloria McGraw told the board the new festival grew from the former Moonlight Madness celebration. This year it will be held on Saturday, July 26, with a focus on crafts, artisans and food producers, she said.

"We've been referring to it as a farmers market on steroids," she said.

Area churches and civic groups will be invited to join the festivities, she said. The goal is to get people to come to Farmington, she added.
