Cell phone service can only be suspended in unavoidable circumstances [Pakistan Press International]

(Pakistan Press International Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday ordered federal and provincial authorities to resort to practices of imposing ban on pillion riding and suspending cell phone services in the city only under unavoidable circumstances. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar gave this direction while hearing a petition filed by Haji Gul Ahmed, representing a non-government organization, who moved the court against practices of slapping ban on pillion riding, suspending mobile phone services on the pretext of law and order situation.

The petitioner submitted before the bench that provincial government mostly slapped ban on pillion riding in the city on pretext of law and order situation, which was sheer violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens, as it forces people to face hardship.

He said that pillion riding did not help combat terrorism but corrupt police officials use these restriction to mint money. He said that federal and provincial authorities usually suspended the mobile phone services on security concerns, which also troubled the citizens in case of any emergency. He pleaded to the court to declare the restrictions as violation of the Constitution and restrain government from imposing such practices. The court was also requested to direct government to impose ban on taking out rallies and protests through the main roads.
