Outstanding Technology Center students traveling to Indianapolis [Durant Daily Democrat, Okla. :: ]


(Durant Daily Democrat (OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 29--Top students from the Business Administration and Information Technology program at Kiamichi Technology Center, Durant Campus, will be attending the Business Professionals of America (BPA) 2014 National Leadership Conference, "Accelerate Your Future," in Indianapolis, April 30-May 4.



Kiamichi chapter members, Mary Pierce, Amanda Kraemer, Judy Olive, Shawna Reno, and Matthew Scott, will join over 6,000 other conference delegates from across the nation to participate in national-level business skill competitions, workshops, general sessions, and the national officer candidate campaigns and elections. To qualify for the National Conference, the students placed first or second at the State level in their respective competitions. Besides having the opportunity to excel, they'll experience Indianapolis as they visit exciting sites.

"The conference will be the culmination of a school year's worth of business workforce education and training which members of the local chapter of BPA at Kiamichi Technology Center have received," said chapter advisors, Penny Lovell and Kelly Nelson, who teach in the program. On March 10-12, 2014, eleven students from the program participated in the State Leadership Conference in Tulsa. Those students placing in the top 10 of each contest were called to the stage at the Awards Assembly to receive their award.


Placing first in Medical Office Skills was Shawna Reno, an adult student at Kiamichi. She also placed second in Insurance Concepts, and third in Business Meetings Management. Placing first in Insurance Concepts was Mary Pierce, and she also placed third in Ethics & Professionalism and Administrative Support Concepts, fourth in Parliamentary Procedure Concepts, seventh in Management/Marketing/Human Resources Concepts, and eighth in Business Meetings Management. Amanda Kraemer placed fifth in Insurance Concepts. Judy Olive placed seventh in Parliamentary Procedure Concepts. The Administrative Support Team of Amanda Kraemer, Judy Olive, and Mary Pierce placed second, which qualified them to attend the National Conference also.

Matthew Scott, a senior from Durant High School attending Kiamichi, placed first in the State in Job Interview Skills. Scott also placed third in Fundamental Word Processing Skills and Administrative Support Concepts, fourth in Insurance Concepts, fifth in Project Management Concepts, and seventh in Business Meetings Management. Durant High School senior Chelsea Brown placed fourth in Graphic Design Promotion. Charity Smith, a junior from Rock Creek High School, placed fifth in Graphic Design Promotion; she also placed sixth in Parliamentary Procedure Concepts and seventh in Financial Math & Analysis. Other high school students from Kiamichi attending and competing at the State Conference this year were Scott Gould, a senior from Calera; Melanie Wilson, a junior from Achille; Shelbie Mangham, a senior from Rock Creek; and Makayla Reno, a senior from Colbert.

Business Professionals of America is a national organization for high school, college and middle school students preparing for careers in business and information technology. The organization's activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school. Business Professionals of America acts as a cohesive agent in the nationwide networking of education and business and industry. BPA is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills. Business Professionals of America is assisted in this endeavor with financial support from corporations and companies including Shell, Thomson South-Western, and Marshalls, who sponsor BPA's National Leadership Conference, and member career building programs and scholarships.
