UAE plays a key role in shaping up the global telecoms sector, TRA chief [Gulf News (United Arab Emirates)]

(Gulf News (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dubai: The UAE is looking to put one of its own in the ITU's leadership.

Nasser Bin Hammad, Senior Manager International Affairs, TRA, announced his candidacy for the Radio Regulations Board for the period of 2014 to 2018.

"I am sure one member from the UAE will hold a key post in ITU," said Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, Director General of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of the UAE and Head of the UAE delegation.

"We are putting our candidature for re-election and hopefully we get it. We are demanding to be the vice-chairman of the council group and UAE chairs the council meeting next year," he said.

Al Ganem said the UAE has played a major role in shaping up the global policymaking of the telecommunications sector, especially in the last four years. The UAE has moved from being in an observer position at the ITU 20 years ago to the position of a council member today, he said.
