LSU Greek Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity Partner in 10th Annual Greek Week
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) BATON ROUGE, La., April 11 -- Louisiana State University issued the following news release:
The LSU Greek Board of Directors, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge, celebrated the conclusion of an eight-day blitz build of two homes for two Baton Rouge families on Sunday.
Known simply as "Greek Week," the partnership began in 2004 and since that time the Greek community has raised more than $1.2 million for Habitat for Humanity through an all-Greek letter writing campaign and built 18 homes for deserving families in the Baton Rouge area. Just this year the Greek community raised more than $175,000 with approximately 1,000 members of the Greek community participating in the build.
Greek Week started March 29 with the Blessing of the Build, a tradition that allows the home's future owners, student leaders and volunteers to celebrate the milestone week.
Throughout the week Greek volunteers participate in different construction activities under the supervision of a volunteer construction team. Greek volunteers were tasked with jobs such as nailing boards and siding, using power tools and painting.
"Each Greek organization has their own philanthropy, but Greek Week is one project that unites the Greek community for Habitat for Humanity," said Assistant Director of Greek Week Rachel Rhodes. "It was amazing to watch slabs of concrete transform into complete homes in such a short period of time. So much is accomplished in so little time thanks to the power of working together."
Greek Week concluded on Saturday, April 5, with a dedication ceremony led by Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge Lynn Clark.
The homes built by the Greek community relieve deserving families of the cost burden of their current living situation and provide a safe outdoor environment for their children. Habitat for Humanity sells the homes at no-profit and are financed with an affordable, no-interest 20-year mortgage.
Greek Week is possible with help from sponsors and private donors, including Rice Voelker, Whole Foods, Campus Cooks, R&N Poultry Inc., Montan Trust, Raising Cane's, Associated Grocers, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge and the Greek Board of Directors.
