Amazon to release 3D smartphone [ITP.net (United Arab Emirates)]

(ITP.net (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Amazon is preparing to release a 3D Smartphone, according to online reports.

The handset will reportedly aim to compete against devices produced by Apple and Samsung with the help of its 3D imagery feature.

The online retail giant has showcased the hardware to developers in Seattle and San Francisco in recent weeks in advance of a rollout later this year, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people briefed on the company's plans.

The phone is expected to employ retina-tracking technology embedded in four front-facing cameras, or sensors, to make some images appear to be 3-D, similar to a hologram, without the need to wear special glasses.

According to reports, Amazon plans to announce the new phone in June and begin shipping phones in September, ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Amazon has long been rumoured to be working on a smartphone to pair with its Kindle Fire range of Android tablets and compete with offerings from Google and Apple.

The online retailer is not new to designing and making hardware, having created a wand that can be used to scan product barcodes at home, enabling users to order merchandise without logging on to computers. Amazon's hardware portfolio also includes Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, and last week, it unveiled the Fire TV set-top box.

Amazon made no immediate response to the report.
