NCKU Professor's Research on Bike-Share System Published in 'Operations Research'TAINAN, Taiwan --(Business Wire)-- Dr. I-Lin Wang, Associate Professor at Department of Industrial & Information Management, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, has worked with researchers from Singapore and China to explore the decision-making in public bike sharing systems. The research, "Models for Effective Deployment and Redistribution of Bicycles within Public Bicycle-Sharing Systems," had published in the journal, "Operations Research," in November 2013. Dr. Wang said, "Bike-sharing has become a global phenomenon recently. Decisions on the locations and number of bikes and racks to be installed for rental sites are the keys to the success for such systems." He also said, to provide a good service quality, it is also crucial to figure out ways to maintain ood bike inventories in different time periods among rental sites. All of these decisions are difficult to make, but can be analyzed by the theories of Operations Research (OR), which is the specialty of Prof. Wang. He is interested in solving optimization problems, developing efficient and effective algorithms to solve easy/difficult/fundamental/challenging optimization problems. Prof. Wang has started the investigation on bike sharing related research topics by using OR theories and techniques since 2008. He has advised 6 master theses conducting bike sharing related research, and has won 6 thesis or paper awards. In 2010, he invited Prof. Chun Piao Teo from the National University of Singapore to visit NCKU for one week, in which time they focused on investigating bike sharing related topics. Later, Prof. Teo invited his colleagues and former students to a larger team and co-authored a paper entitled "Models for Effective Deployment and Redistribution of Bicycles within Public Bicycle-Sharing Systems." In the paper they proposed novel mathematical models to formulate the network design and management problems for a bike sharing system. After 3 years of review process, finally their paper has been published in Operations Research, a flagship journal of INFORMS. Their paper is the 14th one with Author affiliation from Taiwan since 1952, and the 7th one since 2000.
