City Dude - Get Off the Phone!

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Thank God for smart phones. They have made life easier. They have made even the dumbest look smart because anything can easily be 'googled'. Now it's easy to ask someone a simple question and they answer mbu, "you google that, naawe," as if it is the solution to everything. The smart phones also took the use of social media especially Facebook and Twitter, and now WhatsApp - the mother of all evils - to another level.

For some people, Facebook is a way of telling the whole world about their make-ups, breakups, sad and happy moments, when and what they have eaten - I mean, everything: even when they have not showered because it is too cold. Which means by the time you reach office, we all know that you skipped the shower and the chicks will be distancing themselves from you.

Do you remember the day we woke up to Princess Juliana Kanyomozi's green thong after his bad boy from South Africa (King Lawrence) posted it? Need I add that the same shot had what looked like a used condom? Who does that? Personally, social media has made me lose respect for people. It's said that it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

We do not have to believe and judge people by what they post but it is also so strange to think that before Facebook, all of this nonsense just stayed in people's heads.

So, when you see people typing and scrolling on their phones hours on end, they are not responding to mail. They are flirting, checking out photos posted by hot chicks and 'liking' them. Some are possibly hitting on a random babe and busy begging for her number. Stalker! You are at a house party and instead of mixing and mingling, the hot birds are busy fondling their phones with their manicured nails. That is the point you feel like you want to scream: "Get off the phone!" Then another thought comes to mind, what if she is busy lying to her boyfriend so he gets off her back and you have a great time? These days, you are in a taxi and people are busy scrolling their phones. Woe unto you if you ask for direction, you could be asked to use Google maps.

Even on dates, you see couples picking up their handsets every now and then. Back in the day, you only picked up the phone to receive a call. In fact the phone calls should also be ignored during certain meetings. So, as we go out this weekend, remember to stay off your phone and interact more with real people and less with your virtual friends.

If all fails, try this trick: when you reach your usual kafunda and everybody has arrived including the night's dates, the belles, everybody should put his or her phone away.

Whoever feels the itch to scratch theirs first pays the next round. Most importantly, get off line and get inline. Spend some quality time with your friends and family this weekend.
