Technology versus common sense [Corsicana Daily Sun, Texas :: ]

(Corsicana Daily Sun (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 20--The gadgets of the future will include an internet-assisted backyard grill, according to news accounts this past week.

The grill is already on its way. It's wi-fi enabled, and allows the cook to pull up recipes and the grill tells you when to put the food on and when to flip those steaks. If you haven't turned the meat after 30 minutes, the grill shuts off the gas for you. Because it's the smart grill and it knows best.

I have never met a backyard chef who wanted someone to tell him or her how to do the job. It's like a rule not to mess with the grill-master, right? I don't see the bossy grill becoming a household must-have.

They may be like smart TVs -- bragging rights only. I was at a meeting this last week and someone was talking about a smart TV. This person, who will remain nameless to prevent humiliation, defined a smart TV as one that is internet capable, and all those buttons remain untouched on her TV, she said.

Here's how I use the internet on my smart TV: When I first got the TV, I discovered I could see the Facebook on a giant screen. That was back in December, and I haven't done it again since then.

Of course, I last checked my Facebook account in February, so I'm in no hurry, really.

Speaking of connected, I went to visit some friends in their new house in McKinney last week. They're high-tech yuppies, and as the wife was leading me on a tour I noticed that they had either a laptop computer or an iPad in every single room of the house, and lots of the rooms had both. I think I counted about six computers and four iPads for a family of four. The two kids are under the age of 9, by the way. At the end of the tour, I mentioned the plethora of gadgets and my friend just sighed and said it was her husband and kids who are into the computers.

And this just goes to show you that in this age where of all the world's knowledge is practically at our fingertips, nothing replaces common sense. Because the point that my friend seemed to miss was that you don't need one of these every room because laptops and pads? They're portable.
