Snap decision

(Guardian (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Style-Eyes app uses a technique called "machine learning", by which a computer is programmed to mimic human behaviour. The software can process thousands of images of clothes, shoes and handbags, and distinguish what differentiates them.

A fingerprinting system allows a digital code to be created for each item based on characteristics such as colour, shape and pattern. This is then used to categorise each image for search and comparison across a database of products.

The algorithms created by Snap Fashion's Jenny Griffiths at the University of Bristol to identify colour, pattern and shape are still used today, but they are now 100 times faster.
