(Times of Oman Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sus: With the academic discourse about the benefits of counselling in full swing, students of the College of Applied sciences (CAS) Sur attended a workshop on Academic Counselling, organised by the PR students of the 2009 batch of the Department of Communication Studies at Sur College.
The workshop was part of their ongoing campaign to popularise Academic Advising among CAS students.
Among those who were present at the workshop were Dr Said Al Farsi, Dean of the College; Dr Abdelkadir, Assistant Dean; Sushil Kumar Sharma, supervisor of the campaign; Waleed Al Farsi, Head of English Department; Dr Virendra Gawande, Head of IT Department; Amal Al Gheilani from Students Affairs Department, and Shamsa from Registration Department, besides hundreds of students from different disciplines.
Speakers from different spectrums of academic life shared their experiences on the topic. A question and answer session was organised to respond to students' queries related to different issues.
Dr Said Al Farsi, College Dean, advised the students to regularly meet their supervisor and benefit from the advice. "The students should regularly meet their supervisor to discuss different issues and resolve them through mutual consultation."
Sushil Kumar Sharma said, "College is like a home for the students for five years, and they spend the best years of their life here. Academic advising is part and parcel of college life. So, they should be familiar with all its aspects. They should treat the college as their home and their adviser as their guardian. Regular interaction with the adviser will help them in honing their skills and they will enjoy college life as well."
Dr Waleed Al Farsi shared his experiences from his student days at the Sultan Qaboos University, and the United Kingdom where he pursued his Masters degree.
