Jamaican Bobsled Team Wins Webby for Crowdtilt Campaign to Fund Olympic Dreams

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

Crowdtilt, the most versatile technology platform connecting people and payments for group experiences, purchases and causes, is proud to announce that the Jamaican Bobsled Team has been recognized with a Webby Award for their ingenuity in using a crowdfunding campaign on Crowdtilt to fund their trip to the Sochi Olympics.

Although the two-man bobsled team of Winston Watts and Marvin Dixon qualified for the 2014 Winter Olympics, they lacked the resources to get there. The athletes had to get creative with fundraising, so they turned to the Internet. A fan named Lincoln Wheeler had created a crowdfunding campaign for the team on Crowdtilt, and the initiative took off. The team's president, Chris Stokes, and Cool Runnings founding team member Devon Harris reached out to Wheeler and designated his Crowdtilt campaign the team's official fundraiser. Ultimately, 2,855 contributors from 52 different countries around the world raised $129,000 in 3 days through the Crowdtilt platform to send the team to the games.

"We could not have imagined the kind of support that we received from the Internet community - thousands of people from all over the world collaborating to support our dreams, joining forces to donate, spread our story and send us their words of encouragement," said Olympian Winston Watts. "The experience of seeing the world step up through the Crowdtilt campaign was truly priceless."

"We are so proud that Winston and Marvin used the Crowdtilt platform to realize their Olympic dreams," said James Beshara, CEO of Crowdtilt. "This campaign is an inspiring example of what can be achieved through the power of crowdfunding, and demonstrates how people can join together to level the playing field."
