In a counterclaim filed by Samsung, the panel also said Apple Inc. infringed Samsung Electronics Co. patents and awarded $158,000 in damages to the South Korean company. The jury delivered the decisions in federal court in San Jose on Friday in the latest lawsuits involving the two tech giants. Apple Inc. had sought $2.2 billion after accusing Samsung Electronics Co. of infringing five of its patents covering functions such as slide-to-lock, universal searching and quick linking. Samsung had sought $6 million after arguing Apple had infringed two of its smartphone patents related to camera use and video transmission. U.N. official: Torture common in Mexico MEXICO CITY - A United Nations official said the torture of detainees in Mexico continues to be widespread and occurs between the time of arrest and when suspects appear before a judge. U.N. special rapporteur on torture Juan Mendez said that signs of torture are found on people arrested by all levels of authority, from the military to state and local police. Mendez spoke Friday in a press conference at the end of a two- week visit to Mexico, where he met with officials, activists and victims of torture. He said practices reported include beatings with fists, feet and sticks, asphyxiating with plastics bags and electric shock to the genitals. Jindal to appeal feds' decision on hospitals BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said he will appeal federal officials' rejection of financing plans for privatization deals involving six state-owned hospitals that care for the state's poor and uninsured. In a statement, the Republican governor said the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services "has no legal basis for this decision." The federal agency told the Jindal administration Friday that the deals don't meet federal guidelines governing how Medicaid dollars can be spent. The decision could create massive upheaval in the state's budget. Jindal didn't wait for federal approval before he shifted hospital management, so the hospitals are now operating under financing plans that have been rejected after being used to balance Louisiana's budget. Jindal, however, said there would be no short-term impact on the budget because the state will appeal. Bombing near Egypt subway station kills 1 CAIRO - An Egyptian security official said a car exploded in a busy Cairo district, leaving one person dead and injuring two others. It was the fourth attack in one day and brings death toll to five. The official said the blast rocked Ramses central district near a subway station late Friday. He added that it is not clear yet whether it was a car bomb or if an attacker hurled an explosive device at a moving car. The official said security forces cordoned off the area, and explosive experts are inspecting the site for any more possible bombs. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief media.
