Next phase in TV viewing [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]

(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GOING CURVY: Manufacturers are now rolling out curved television models, said to best suit the natural curvature of our eyes.

WE have seen flat-screen televisions taking over from the bulky cathode ray TV (CRTV) sets over the last decade. The choice was between two display technologies, plasma and LCD, generally. Plasma televisions, although a popular flat-screen choice for many in the beginning, lost out to the LCD as the latter technology made tremendous advancement. TVs were also made much slimmer and consumers were given choices in TV sizes, from 32in, 40in, 46in, 50in and 64, among others.

Then, we were introduced to OLED models which use organic light emitting diodes to provide much brighter and colourful pictures compared to the LCD. However, because of the high price factor, the OLED televisions, which now have high-definition (HD) 1080p resolutions like the LCD and Plasma, did not make much of an impression in the market.

From HD version, TV viewing was given a further boost in recent years with the introduction of Ultra HDTVs. Also known as 4K LCD TVs, the models have four times the resolution (3,840x2,160 pixels) of conventional HDTVs, providing more sharper and detailed images. Although it provides a huge leap in terms of picture clarity and details, the ultra HDTVs are a little too expensive for many to own. A 55-inch model can set you back between RM15,000 and RM18,000, and a 64-inch between RM17,000 and RM20,000. The price and the fact that not much 4K quality content is available, the conventional HDTVs remain ideal in the eye of consumers.

Now, industry experts are saying curve is the way to go with TVs. All major television makers like LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony showcased their curved models at IFA European trade show late last year and at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 early this year. The curvature shape, according to some manufacturers, create an impression of watching a TV larger than its actual size and provides a wider field of view than a flat-screen. This, they say, provides a cinema-like immersive viewing experience.

The curve shape can also cut down reflections from the surrounding environment. It is also said to best suit the way our eyes absorb images more comfortably.
