Homestead HIV Clinic to Serve Uninsured Floridians, Keys Residents

HOMESTEAD, Fla. --(Business Wire)--

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) will open its newest Healthcare Center in the United States Thursday in the Floridian city of Homestead. AHF Healthcare Centers are specialized HIV clinics that offer expert treatment and care for people living with HIV/AIDS, and there are more than 30 such clinics throughout the US. The Homestead clinic, however, is unique in that it offers care exclusively to uninsured patients and people receiving insurance through federal Ryan White coverage. Additionally, for clients who live in the Florida Keys, this new clinic will be the first care opportunity they reach on the mainland, drastically reducing commutes and increasing access to care.

"While all AHF clinics are proud to offer cutting-edge treatment and care regardless of one's ability to pay, we're particularly excited about the opportunities this new Homestead clinic will offer to people living with HIV and AIDS who lack insurance or rely on federal coverage through the Ryan White program," said Michael Kahane, AHF's Southern .S. Region Bureau Chief, who oversees care in Florida and the Caribbean. "It's also crucial for clients to be able to access care close to their homes - no one should have to drive for hours just to get a check-up when they're living with a manageable, yet serious, condition. Our Homestead clinic grants people living with HIV/AIDS in the Keys that opportunity to drastically reduce their travel time without compromising the quality of their care."

The new clinic, which has six specialized providers to care for patients, will begin seeing patients Thursday. Benefit counselors will also be available through the clinic to talk to patients who may be unsure of their eligibility for federal programs like Ryan White, which is the largest federal program dedicated to providing care for those living with HIV. Originally introduced in 1990, the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act was reauthorized in 2006 and 2009. Most recently, the program was rejuvenated through the bi-partisan passage of the Ryan White Equity and Choice Act in March 2014. The new bill improves the program to ensure that funding allocations are evidence based, and that funding targets interventions that get people into care and keep them there.
