Fire prevention website offers campfire permits online [The Sacramento Bee :: ]

(Sacramento Bee (CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 24--People planning to picnic or camp over the Memorial Day weekend can obtain campfire permits online before leaving home.

The California Wildfire Coordination Group unveiled a new fire prevention website, which for the first time offers an online campfire permit section. The interagency group is made up of local, state and federal fire agencies, including the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

After watching a brief video on proper campfire techniques, the applicant will take a short quiz about the video and then receive a printable permit for free, according to a CalFire news release. Permits also are available at any CalFire, U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management station or office.

CalFire officials offer several tips for a safe campfire: --Obtain a campfire permit and make sure there are no fire restrictions in the area.

--Use only approved and established campgrounds and campfire rings.

--Locate the campfire a safe distance from tents, trees or buildings.

--Clear the area around the campfire down to soil 5 feet from the fire's edge.

--Never let children use or play with lighter fluid or have them start a campfire.

--Completely extinguish campfires before leaving or going to bed.
