BRIEF: Gigabit IPA returns for a (very) limited engagement ahead of Portland's Google Fiber vote [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 08--When Google Fiber announced in February that it hoped to bring gigabit Internet service to Portland, city officials celebrated by hoisting bottles of Gigabit IPA.

Empty bottles.

Hopworks Urban Brewery offered the beer briefly, in 2010, during what was then an unsuccessful campaign to bring Google Fiber and its gigabit Internet speeds (1,000 megabits per second.) Google picked Kansas City instead, and Gigabit IPA vanished.

Now, it's back. For at least one day.

New Relic will be serving the beer Monday when the website optimizer hosts one of its regular Portland FutureTalks. Monday's (free) talk features Chris Rieth of Socrata talking about "putting data to work to help governments make and share progress." This isn't a full revival, says Hopworks marketing director Bruce Kehe. Monday's batch is all the brewery has planned.

So is this the same beer folks enjoyed in 2010? "Everything evolves a little bit over time," he said. "There'll be some tweaks to it, but nothing too dramatic." The Portland City Council votes Wednesday on a franchise agreement for Google Fiber. Look for more on the service next week.
