CS names new Sony Sugar boss [Nation (Kenya)]

(Nation (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The government has confirmed Ms Jane Odhiambo as the managing director of South Nyanza Sugar Company.

Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei announced the appointment through a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated May 30.

Ms Odhiambo had been the acting manager of the Migori County-based miller since the departure of Mr Paul Odola in 2012.

She becomes the first woman to head a sugar company in the country, having risen from her position as the miller's head of marketing and business development.

"The appointment celebrates the intellectual acumen of all women and I will be sparing no energy to ensure that Sony Sugar delivers against its mandate," said Ms Odhiambo upon her appointment.

South Nyanza Sugar Company is one of the five state-owned millers that the government plans to sell to private investors with a view to injecting competitiveness in a bid to revive the sugar industry.

It was established in 1976 and serves more than 25,000 farmers.
