Researchers Awarded Euros1.2 Million Under Enterprise Ireland's Commercialisation Fund

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WATERFORD, Ireland, June 18 -- Waterford Institute of Technology issued the following news release: Enterprise Ireland recently awarded almost Euros1.2 million to Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) through its Commercialisation Fund which aims to improve the competitiveness of the Irish economy.


The funding was awarded to three WIT projects to develop commercially relevant innovations.

According to Prof Willie Donnelly, Head of Research and Innovation at the Institute, "WIT is a university-level education institution that supports a thriving research culture, particularly in the areas of ICT, bio-pharma, eco-innovation, materials science, regional development, and health sciences. We have developed a particular competency in turning research into strong commercial propositions.Enterprise Ireland's Commercialisation Fund is a natural fit for us as its main aim is to drive economic competitiveness through the creation of technology start-ups and the transfer of new innovations to industry." The researchers and projects funded at the Institute in the areas of ICT and engineering are: Mr Philip Walsh, Convergent Technologies Research Group (CTRG): Develop an ICT Enabled Diagnostic System for Continuous Real-Time Monitoring in Advanced Biomedical & Life Science Applications.

Dr Jason Barron, Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG) at WIT: PANDA: Policy Authoring and Analysis System in Instant Messaging and Enterprise Social Network Environments.

Dr Ramesh Raghavendra, South Eastern Applied Materials Research Centre (SEAM): Fibre Optic Remote Cartilage Assessment Tool for Arthroscopy Applications (FORCAST).

Researchers in WIT have substantial experience in coordinating projects and securing funding at national and EU level, with the Institute securing over Euros63 million directly since 2008, while being involved in projects totalling over Euros185 million. As a result of its work on collaborative research projects, WIT has built extensive alliances with leading industrial and academic partners across Europe.

In working with local SMEs, the Institute plays a significant role in the South-East region's economic development by creating an eco-system of research, industry and entrepreneurship. WIT also encompasses a purpose-built centre for commercialisation and business incubation in its ArcLabs facility, as well as dedicated research support and technology transfer offices.
