Rise of killswitch for stolen phones [Mirror (UK)]

(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GOOGLE and Microsoft will copy Apple and Samsung by introducing a "killswitch" to their mobile phones.

The move comes after a report revealed that iPhone theft had fallen dramatically in the six months since Apple added the security feature to its mobile operating system.

A "killswitch" gives users the power to disable a smartphone remotely if it is stolen. It also increases security by adding more password layers.

According to the report by the New York State Attorney General, iPhone robberies fell by 20% in London since Activation Lock was added to Apple's iOS 7 last year. In April, Samsung added Reactivation Lock.

The report said: "Microsoft confirms it will add a killswitch to the next Windows Phone OS. Google will do the same for its new Android OS." [email protected] (c) 2014 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
