Sharon Kleyne Believes Earth Best Model for Fresh Water Conservation and Recycling

In this era of global climate change and widespread water shortages, water conservation and recycling are critical. Nobody is more aware of this than fresh water researcher, entrepreneur and radio host Sharon Kleyne, who has studied water behavior and technology for more than 30 years. Kleyne believes that although conservation and recycling are vitally important, not all conservation measures are wise. The ultimate model, according to Kleyne, is Earth itself.

Kleyne cites the human body as a model of wise water use. The body requires a minimum of eight glasses of fresh water each day –more when under stress. Conserving water by drinking less is ill advised and can lead to severe health consequences. One of the world's great humanitarian challenges, according to Kleyne, is to make sure everyone receives their eight glasses no matter where they live or how severe the local water shortage.
Although conserving water by drinking less is not advised, says Kleyne, recycling the water we drink is an excellent conservation strategy. It is possible, Kleyne explains, to drink eight glasses of water one day, and a few days later, drink the same water over again.
An outstanding example of wise and efficient water conservation, says Kleyne, is the Singapore model. Singapore is a tiny island nation of five million people that has achieved full water independence. Their program involves extraordinary efforts at water conservation, capture, recycling and new technology. That includes rooftop gardens, rain barrels, a redesigned sewer and storm drain system, purifying recycled water to drinkable standards, dozens of small dams and reservoirs, and desalinization. Conservation includes the use of dual-flush toilets the use of dish, shower and laundry waste water for lawns and gardens.
Kleyne sees the Singapore model as the Earth in microcosm. Earth, Kleyne explains, recycles nearly every drop of water through evaporation, runoff; storage in lakes, ground water, oceans and ice; and the hydrologic cycle. Because water distribution is uneven, nearly every species is adapted to either a water rich or a water poor environment. The camel only requires water ever couple days whereas mangrove and baldcypress trees have evolved unusual methods of obtaining air for their constantly submerged root systems.
Baldcypress trees grow knobby extension on their roots, called "knees," which stick up above the water. Mangroves have stilt-like roots that extend above the water level. In humid rain forests, "air plants" grow on tree limbs and their roots simply dangle in the air. So humid is the air that the roots obtains all the moisture they need.
Kleyne's company, Bio Logic Aqua Research, is deeply involved in water technology based on the Earth model. The product "Nature's Tear® EyeMist®" was developed after Kleyne observed that eyes can lose a surprisingly large amount of water to the air due to evaporation but under the right circumstances, they can also absorb a surprisingly large amount of water directly from the air.
Nature's Tear® EyeMist®" is a personal hand held device that emits a small quantity of ultra-fine mist that resembles humid air. When eyes or skin become too dry because of dryness in the surrounding atmosphere, it is not necessary to raise the humidity everywhere, only for a few inches in front of the eyes and face.
