(Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot (CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 19--The Laguna Beach City Council granted $18,000 to local radio station KX 93.5 for emergency preparedness measures.

The unanimous vote at the June 3 budget meeting means the radio station can install backup generators so it can broadcast for days during a power outage. It can also maintain a reliable Internet connection and utilize a wireless link to City Hall so officials can use remote broadcasts to communicate with the public.

"FM radio is historically the most relied-upon medium in the event of a major emergency," station founder Tyler Russell said in a news release. "This unanimous decision shows that the city takes KX 93.5's ability to disseminate information seriously. We are very thankful." He added that the station has offered uninterrupted service 24 hours a day since its October 2012 debut.

Part of the money from the city will help station hosts report on street closures, escape routes, dangerous areas and advisories by the police and fire departments.
