UNH Writes to Obama in Support of White House Maker Faire

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WEST HAVEN, Conn., June 18 -- The University of New Haven issued the following news release: Responding to President Barack Obama's call to empower America's students and entrepreneurs to invent the future -- and in conjunction with the first-ever White House Maker Faire being held on Wednesday - the University of New Haven has written a letter of support to the President and co-signed another letter of support along with 151 other colleges and universities.

"As home to one of the nation's finest engineering program and as a national leader in experiential education, the University of New Haven believes wholeheartedly in empowering Americans to become producers of things, not just consumers of things," wrote UNH president Steven H. Kaplan. "We are very invested in STEM and the Maker movement, and we are committed to doing all that we can as an institution, and as educators, to prepare the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and others who will change our world." The Maker Movement celebrates America as a nation of tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs. Maker Faires take place around the nation and often host a growing number of Americans who have access to technologies like 3D printers, laser cutters, easy-to-use design software, and desktop machine tools, democratizing the act of making and enabling citizens to build just about anything.

The White House Maker Faire will feature makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life.
