Field Law Announces Award Winners of 2014 Community Fund Program

(Marketwire (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - July 3, 2014) - Field Law, a regional law firm with offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Yellowknife, is pleased to announce three winners of the 2014 Field Law Community Fund Program. The Program, which was created to support local community initiatives, had 84 applicants in its second year, with 38 stemming from the Southern Alberta market. Field Law granted three grand prize awards in the Southern Alberta market, providing funds to help launch or grow each local project. Each of the winners received all of the funds they requested.

Winners were selected through a combination of online votes and deliberation by a local judging panel composed of Field Law people, interested clients and community members, allowing the public to weigh in on the projects closest to their hearts and communities. This allowed the panelists to know which projects resonated most with the local community so that they could factor this into their decision-making along with other criteria. Field Law's preferred causes (but not exclusive) are those that support education, healthcare, at-risk youth, homelessness, women's organizations, community and sports or arts and culture.

Corporate social responsibility and community engagement is front of mind for the team at Field Law, both at a professional and personal level.

"We're proud to be able to assist communities through our program in Southern Alberta," said Doreen Saunderson, Executive Committee Member in the Calgary office at Field Law. "There were many worthy groups who requested awards in 2014, and we're thrilled with the community award Program's success for the second year. We believe that our contribution can positively impact people's lives, and look forward to future opportunities to make a difference." Field Law congratulates the following grand prize winners of the 2014 Community Fund Program: Defy Depression ($15,000 recipient) Depression is insidious and impacts every aspect of one's life no matter what gender, culture, or status one may be. One in five people are depressed and approximately one in twelve employees believe they are depressed although they have not been assessed. An individual who is depressed and untreated impacts at least three people in their network. Three million Canadians will experience depression at some point in their life, and annually the economic cost of depression is $7.9 billion. Yet depression is highly treatable: 80% of people can and do recover. The earlier it's identified and treated; the more effective the outcome. Defy Depression is an initiative from the Calgary Counselling Centre based on a four pillar approach focusing on: Activation, Access, Training & Education, and Research. This initiative will build a stronger community, and a stronger economy.

The Saturday Children's Learning Program ($10,000 recipient) The Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre (DDRC) is seeking this grant to launch the Saturday Children's Learning Program with the objective of helping youth with autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities improve their day-to-day lives. Many children who have developmental disabilities require assistance, and their families lack the resources or networks to provide the best opportunities for these children. A second, but equally important benefit of the program is the opportunity for the parents and families of these young people to develop an organic support network of people facing the same challenges. This program will benefit youth ages 2 to 14 who have a developmental disability. As children with developmental disabilities are an at-risk youth population, the DDRC feels that this grant will allow our organization to begin bridging the gap between transitioning from youth to adult. Providing a resource for these basic skills to be further developed allows for these vulnerable youth to have more independent futures. The overall goal of this program is to begin building these basic skills at an early age.

Stampede for All ($5,000 recipient) The Stampede for All idea received the most online votes in this Market with over 2,000 or 15% of the votes.

The Calgary Stampede is an exciting time of year that brings the best of our city to citizens, visitors and the communities we live in. Unfortunately, enjoying these festivities may be prohibitive to some of our city's most vulnerable because of cost or physical ability. A special Stampede BBQ lunch will bring the food, entertainment and Stampede Spirit to nearly 700 vulnerable Calgarians from Horizon Housing Society's tenants and community partners who may not normally have the means or physical ability to experience the Calgary Stampede. Because the majority of tenants do not own vehicles, and many are also in wheelchairs or otherwise physically challenged, Horizon Housing will deploy shuttle buses to pick up residents. Events like this Stampede BBQ are the first step to creating community, where individuals and families can make friends, establish connections and ultimately develop a support network that helps them better manage life's challenges.

In addition to the $30,000 distributed in 2014 in the Southern Alberta market, Field Law distributed an additional $45,000 in the Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories markets to deserving projects, for a total of $75,000. The Program launched through all three of Field's offices in Alberta and Northwest Territories in 2013 and is now an annual initiative. To learn more, visit www.fieldlawcommunityfund.com.
