Simsbury Wants To Be A 'Fan Favorite' Town [The Hartford Courant :: ]

(Hartford Courant (CT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 09--SIMSBURY -- Dominique Avery, co-chairwoman of the town's tourism committee, is asking residents to vote for Simsbury as a state Connecticut Fan Favorite town.

"People tend to think of us as a boring bedroom community and we are anything but that," Avery said.

The Fan Favorite Town contest is run by the Connecticut Office of Tourism. State residents can vote daily for their town to win the honor of a Fan Favorite Town for the year.

"The biggest thing the state will do for the town that wins is you get bragging rights for the year, but a lot of public relations and promotion for the town," Avery said. "We are doing a big push right now." Avery said the Simsbury Tourism Committee is taking to social media to get the word out about the campaign. Avery and other committee members post information daily on the Simsbury tourism Facebook page about ways to vote for the town.

First Selectman Mary Glassman said she likes the campaign.

"Simsbury is a place of natural beauty, innovation and creativity," Glassman said. "I hope our residents take the time to vote so we can let the entire state know what a jewel our community is." Avery said a marketing consultant was bought to town late last year to help identify areas for growth. The results showed a need to highlight recreational assets, Avery said.

The tourism committee used the results from a marketing study and put together a YouTube video of local landmarks to prompt residents to vote for their town.

Avery said the voting is taking place at facebook.com/VisitConnecticut. Voting ends on July 25.
