Bus garage bidding process up for OK by Waterloo Board of Ed [Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Iowa :: ]

(Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (IA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 20--WATERLOO -- The Board of Education Monday is expected to approve the bidding process for construction and renovation of a relocated bus garage following a public hearing on the topic.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. in the Education Service Center, 1516 Washington St.

In March, the board approved the $505,000 purchase of an industrial building and office at 1624 Blackhawk St. to serve as part of a bus complex. The city of Waterloo's former street department facilities directly across the road would make up the other part of the complex. The project has a price tag of $1.2 to $1.4 million, including the industrial building purchase.

The district expects to save $200,000 annually in bus driver and fuel costs because the garage is more centrally located than the current facility, which is adjacent to the Old Orange Elementary.

The industrial building property would be used for bus maintenance and information technology department offices. An eastern portion of the building -- about 40 percent of it -- would be demolished and the area paved. The remaining structure would undergo remodeling.

Across the road, the barn-like salt building would be razed along with a portion of the former street department building and a canopy on its east side. Those areas would be paved. A portion of the interior two-story area of the remaining building would also be demolished to allow more space for vehicles. Existing office areas would be remodeled and two restrooms added.

In other business, the board is expected to approve: --Participating in the Iowa Association of School Boards safety group insurance plan for 2014-15, with an estimated $1.14 million premium.

--A $787,543 contract with the Black Hawk County Health Department for school nursing services during 2014-15.

--School resource officer agreements for 2014-15 with the city of Waterloo for $250,000 and with the city of Evansdale for $41,666.

--A three-year athletic training services agreement with Cedar Valley Medical Specialists at an annual cost of $45,400 in 2014-15 rising to $47,400 by 2016-17.
