A TRICK OF THE WRIST ; Watch controlled by hand gestures [Eire Region] [Mirror (UK)]

(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) IT looks like a watch - but the latest hi-tech gadget from Apple does a lot more than tell the time.

The touch-screen minicomputer has built-in GPS, can be used as an iPod or linked up with an iPhone.

And, amazingly, it can all be operated with the flick of the wrist.

For example, a simple upward movement of the hand means the user wants to accept an incoming call.

A palm down horizontal gesture means reject it.

While the plans describe the gadget syncing with an iPhone, iPad or desktop computer, there are also clues it can work on its own - unlike smartwatches already being sold.

Much of the circuitry is contained in the watchstrap, which is said to have many other functions the California-based designers are keeping secret until nearer the launch date. The iTime has just been granted copyright protection by the US Patent Office as an "invention pertaining to an electronic wristwatch".

It can also make calls and texts. But its major selling point is expected to be the various taps, bounces and shakes of the wrist used as command signals.

One diagram submitted under patent number 8,787,006 shows how the face can be removed entirely from the strap and used as a portable media player - much like an iPod nano. Apple have yet to admit its designers are working on a smartwatch.

But the plans state: "There are continuing needs to make portable electronic devices smaller and more portable." Alternatively titled the iWatch, the revolutionary device - expected to cost around EUR 220 - could be on sale this autumn, possibly alongside the new iPhone6.
