Coffee Farmers Told to Wait

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NYERI Governor Nderitu Gachagua has urged coffee farmers to be patient over unpaid coffee dues.

He urged the farmers to wait for at least one month before their final payments after the framers received Sh10 for a kilogramme of coffee last month.

Speaking during an interview in a radio station yesterday, Gachagua said the audit committee he set up recently is going to coffee societies to ascertain the debts.

"They will finish their work in two weeks. From there the money will be calculated on how it will be paid. Many debtors are demanding more than Sh130 million from the coffee farmers," he said.

The Nyeri County Marketing Agency and the Kenya Cooperative Coffee Exporters announced that more tha Sh 1.6 billion is ready after the coffee was sold.

The KCCE CEO Lucy Murumba who was accompanied by Gachagua said they are expecting the money since more coffee has been committed.

She said this is the best mode of selling coffee through direct sales but a little was sold though action in Nairobi.

"Some 25 different buyers bought the more than 93,000 bags of Nyeri coffee. Almost all the coffee has been sold," said the CEO.

Gachagua said the farmer's rate of payment will be decided by the farmers at the factory level.

He dismissed today's meeting called by a section of MCAs.

Gachagua said it is a political meeting as farmer's meeting are normally held at the society level.
