Wi-Fi at the beach [Contra Costa Times :: ]
(Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 29--Catch a wave, jump on Wi-Fi
OK, web-savvy travelers, according to a new "who's got the fastest Wi-Fi?" survey by mobile network manager WeFi, the Red Roof Inn and the Sleep Inn hotel chains have the fastest connections. Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Denver International have the fastest airport Wi-Fi. (San Francisco came in at No. 12. Silicon Valley's San Jose International and Oakland failed to crack the top 25.)
And, it turns out, some beaches have speedy Wi-Fi, as well, which begs the question -- do sunscreen drips void your laptop warranty? Southern California's Mission, Santa Monica, Newport and Hermosa beaches clocked in at Nos. 3, 6, 8 and 9, respectively. Find the details, right down to mbps, for the top 12 airports, the top 15 hotels and the top nine beaches at blogs.mercurynews.com/eat-drink-play.
Villains, heroes, distressed maidens and a boisterously hissing crowd? Melodrama is the original interactive theater experience -- and you can revel in the melodramatics of "Bonnie Belle's Best Bloomers" when the historic Golden Chain Theatre stages its latest on Aug. 10 at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, just south of Yosemite National Park's south gate. Enjoy a big barbecue dinner, then board the logger steam train for a ride to the show, which dabbles in gold rush lore as well as Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Yosemite Grant Act 150 years ago. Cheering and booing are encouraged. Tickets are $55 for adults, $27.50 for kids. Find details on this and other moonlight train rides at www.ymsprr.com.
If the spectacle of the California Beer Festival -- brewskis, food, bocce and more, www.californiabeerfestival.com. -- in Aptos Aug. 9-10 isn't enough to get your heart pitter-pattering, check out our ultimate guide to summer fun at www.mercurynews.com/summer-guide.
