American Students Perform Chinese Opera at NCKU

TAINAN, Taiwan --(Business Wire)--

A group of foreign students playing different roles of Chinese opera, tried on different outfits, head pieces and props happily at a recent cultural course organized by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan.

A total of 39 American students who served as the 2014 Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) ambassadors are currently studying at NCKU for Mandarin, and Chinese culture.

A very special class called "Introduction to Chinese Opera" led by Professor Mei-Hua Gao from the Department of Chinese Literature, NCKU on July 29, had draw great interest among the American students who couldnt wait to try out the make-up and costumes for Chinese opera.


"Peking Opera is awesome," said Lucas Thomas from Arizona State University who volunteered for face painting as a Chinese Monkey King.

"The makeup is extremely intricate as I was there for about forty minutes. I was really excited. I'd actually like to sing Peking Opera right now," Lucas added.

Samantha H. Juster from American University who dressed up like a Chinese traditional bride said, "I feel like I'm getting married today and I dressed up for my wedding. The dress is so beautiful that I'm excited to put it on."

Jessica L. Cone from University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) who has had theater training for several years was thrilled to put on the costume to become a military general from ancient China.

"I feel related when I wear the costume because the design and the dragon pattern on it," Jessica said.

She also said, "I have been interested in Peking Opera since I watched mask changing in a film and was fascinated about it."

"It's such a cool experience that I was taught about how to do the gesture and perform on stage," according to Jessica.
