Friedlander Heads Back to Japan as Part of Harvard Forum

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, July 31 -- College of the Atlantic issued the following news release: Jay Friedlander has been invited by the Harvard Project on Asian and International Relations to speak at its 2014 conference.

At the Aug. 22-26 event in Tokyo, Friedlander will join a panel to address "Movements in Energy and Environment that Aim to Increase Quality of Life." The Harvard Project on Asian and International Relations, founded in 1991, brings together "established leaders and top students to engage in dialogues regarding the most pressing issues facing Asia," according to its conference program. The 2014 conference is titled "Reflection and Progression: Fostering Mutual Growth." For Friedlander, founder of the Sustainable Business Program and the inaugural Sharpe-McNally Chair of Green and Socially Responsible Business at College of the Atlantic, it's his second visit to Japan this year: He gave the keynote address at the Asian Conference on Sustainability, Energy and the Environment in Osaka on June 12 with a talk centered on creating abundance simultaneously for enterprise, society, and the environment.

"Asian countries are focused on creating an abundance because they have to be," Friedlander said. "They need economic growth that does not leave them saddled with tremendous pollution, like in China, or with tragedies like Fukushima in Japan." Friedlander has developed a sustainable-business curriculum at COA focused on building social, economic and environmental capital to spark innovation and create competitive advantage. To move students beyond the classroom, he created The Hatchery, a sustainable-enterprise incubator for academic credit which has attracted the attention of Fortune, The Chronicle of Higher Education and AshokaU, a well-known consortium that named College of the Atlantic one of five U.S. "changemaker campuses" in 2009.

Prior to joining College of the Atlantic, Friedlander was chief operating officer for O'Naturals Inc., a natural and organic fast-food restaurant group, and has a broad array of experience in start-up businesses, including work with senior executives of Fortune 500 companies.

As a strategy consultant, he developed and implemented global brand experiences and customer-centered growth strategies for clients including Citigroup and other industry leaders.

He recently wrote an article for Triple Pundit focusing on how Zipcar used strategic sustainability to upend the auto industry.

Friedlander received his MBA from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College, where he specialized in new venture creation and graduated Summa Cum Laude, valedictorian of his class. He earned his undergraduate degree in sociology and anthropology from Colgate University, where he graduated with honors.

College of the Atlantic has been cited by the Princeton Review, the Sustainable Endowment Institute, Fast Company, The New York Times and others as a leader in sustainability.
