Dr. Michael Shaw Elected Hudson Valley Regional Director of the New York State Reading Association

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SPARKILL, N.Y., Aug. 11 -- St. Thomas Aquinas College issued the following news release: Dr. Michael Shaw, professor of education at St. Thomas Aquinas College, was elected as Hudson Valley Regional Director for the New York State Reading Association and will serve on the Board of Directors, announced Dr. Meenakshi Gajria, dean of the School of Education. Shaw currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Rockland Reading Council as its Treasurer.

With this new appointment, Shaw will work with all local Councils in the Hudson Valley to expand initiatives. Specific focus will be made on increasing membership; reaching out to schools to participate in writing publishing projects; and developing programs for parents of early childhood students to read to children. He will also collaborate to develop ongoing professional development, professional conferences and after-school workshops for other Councils in the Hudson Valley based on the successful annual Rockland County Literacy Extravaganza Professional Conference, and free after-school professional workshops that focus on teaching students to achieve Common Core State Standards in reading and writing in all grades.

"This election is a great honor that enables me to support the New York State Reading Association's commitment to increase the professional development of teachers," commented Shaw. "The Association works with local Councils to advocate for the teaching of thoughtful literacy that enables students to achieve Common Core State Standards success." Shaw is a national leader in Literacy Education. He holds leadership positions in the International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, and Save Our Schools, a national organization to promote public education as a civil right that advocates for the elimination of high-stakes testing and evaluation of teachers based on testing results, elimination of publisher-created scripted instruction, and the narrowing of curriculum that is eliminating arts education.

"I look forward to working with Dr. Shaw to support the New York State Reading Association in the Hudson Valley," said Debbie Dermody, New York State Reading Association Representative to the International Reading Association.

The New York State Reading Association serves to promote a literate, democratic society valuing lifelong learning for its diverse cultures. It is an affiliate of the International Reading Association and is comprised of more than 30 local reading councils having a total membership of over 2,500 educators from across New York State. The organization includes classroom teachers, librarians, reading specialists, parents, college educators, and researchers. For more information visit nysreading.org.
