Korea Republic of : SOUTH KOREA's IPTV subscribers reaches 10 million mark [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) South Korea's number of subscribers of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) services reached the 10 million mark this month, maintaining stable growth since they were initially launched here in January 2009.

According to the data compiled by Korea Digital Media Industry Association (KDMIA), one of the country's fixed-line operators, KT Corp., had 5.48 million subscribers, followed by SK Broadband Co. with 2.5 million and LG Uplus Corp. with 2.02 million.

The figures were arrived at on the basis of the number of IPTV devices distributed to households, wherein a household with two IPTV devices is considered to have two subscribers.

The KDMIA said, IPTVs, which brought about the commercialization of video-on-demand (VOD) services, have established an environment to encourage legal use of such visual content, and promoted further penetration (of VOD).

With even movies and animation aimed at IPTV currently being released, the service has emerged as a new retail platform for visual content.

In October 2009, South Korea's subscriptions surpassed the 1 million mark, only nine months after commercial launch, and reached 5 million in April 2012.
