Azimuth Releases US Operator Performance Benchmarking Case Study

ACTON, Mass. --(Business Wire)--

Azimuth Systems (News - Alert), Inc. today announced the availability of its US Operator Performance Benchmarking Case Study. This case study leverages Azimuth's Analytics Solution to compare performance across four major US networks and highlights the impact of device-network interactions on key device and network KPIs. The case study also introduces "System Interaction KPIs" which are specifically designed to identify how devices impact the network.

Clear performance differences were observed, which led to insightful and in some cases counter-intuitive results:

  • The fastest network is 20-50% faster than the other networks despite having more device-network interactions. This network is also the one most likely to offer the best battery life for the device.
  • One network offered very good over-the-air data rate, but couldn't extend these gains to the subscriber resulting in low user perceived data rates.
  • The device spent significantly longer (40-60%) time on 3G than on LTE (News - Alert) for one operator, potentially due to the network settings among other factors. The relatively high time spent on 3G had a direct impact on user experience.
  • The operator with the best application throughput also had the highest number of device-network interactions.

According to Vivek Vadakkuppattu, Director & Head of the Analytics Business unit at Azimuth, "Ever increasing network and device complexity has increased the impact of device-network interactions on the subscriber experience.Traditional testing has not yet caught up to this new reality and instead remains focused on device-specific or network-specific KPIs. The results from this case study highlight that an understanding of device-network interactions can provide new insights into device and network performance, ultimately impacting end user experience."

Conducting simple comparisons of throughput are no longer sufficient. Devices impact each network differently and a view into device-network interactions using metrics such as "System Interaction KPIs" can offer new insights into performance differences. Azimuth Analytics is a leading platform for automating benchmarking and regression testing of devices and network elements and is designed to provide operators, network equipment manufacturers and device OEMs the data they need to continually improve device and network performance.
