Food City, Smithfield, and NASCAR Legend, Richard Petty, Continue the Mission Supporting Paralyzed Veterans of America

WASHINGTON --(Business Wire)--

Celebrating four years of partnership, Food City and seven-time NASCAR Champion and NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee, Richard Petty, will continue the mission to raise critical funds for Paralyzed Veterans of America's Mission: ABLE campaign, which ensures veterans get the health care, benefits and jobs they've earned. Smithfield, sponsor of the famed No. 43 Smithfield Ford, will also join the fundraising efforts with special offers for customers during the Food City campaign this fall.

"Teaming up with Food City and Smithfield for the Mission: ABLE campaign is a natural fit for me, the Petty Family Foundation and what we believe in at Richard Petty Motorsports," said longtime supporter, Richard Petty. "It's our responsibility to give back and make a difference. And, that's what we're able to do through this campaign."

Through this collaboration, Food City and loyal Food City customers have helped raised over $350,000 to benefit severely injured veterans and their families in the local community and nationwide.

"We're grateful for Food City and their customers for answering the call," said Al Kovach, national president of Paralyzed Veterans. "It's because of their generosity over the years that we're able to continue the important work we do to ensure our veterans live productive and healthy lives in this community and across this great nation."

The campaign, which will be featured throughout the company's retail supermarket chain, begins August 30, 2014, and continues through October 11, 2014. Specially marked $1, $3, and $5 donation slips will be available at the checkouts. Customers wishing to make a contribution simply need to select the desired dollar amount and it will be conveniently added to their order total. One hundred percent of the donations collected will benefit Paralyzed Veterans of America.

"It's a pleasure to work with such an icon of NASCAR, to see how he gives back to our Country and our communities, while giving our loyal customers an opportunity to support our great military men and women," says Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer.

In addition, Smithfield will be offering special coupons for customers making a donation at checkout.

"Smithfiel is proud to partner with Food City and Richard Petty to benefit Paralyzed Veterans of America and military members who have made such significant sacrifices for our country and freedom," said Dennis Pittman, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Smithfield. "So many racing fans are loyal customers of Smithfield and shop at Food City, and the racing community is traditionally incredibly supportive of our military, so it makes sense to come together to benefit such an important cause."

Paralyzed Veterans of America is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit veterans service organization founded in 1946. Paralyzed Veterans advocates for quality health care, research and education addressing spinal cord injury and dysfunction, benefits available as a result of our members' military service, and civil rights and opportunities that maximize the independence of our members. Paralyzed Veterans also provides sports and recreation programs for veterans with disabilities.

About Paralyzed Veterans of America

Paralyzed Veterans of America was founded by a group of seriously injured American heroes from the "Greatest Generation" of World War II. They created a nonprofit organization to meet the challenges that they faced back in the 1940s-from a medical community not ready to treat them to an inaccessible world. For more than 68 years, Paralyzed Veterans' national office and its 34 chapters across the nation have been making America a better place for all veterans and people with disabilities. (www.pva.org)
