Cattle Prices At Pugu Market As Supply Declines


(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The average sales per market day for cattle at Pugu market declined by 5.2 per cent last week to 554 from 583 of the previous period, the situation that pushed up prices of some breeds.

Industry and Trade monthly Livestock Marketing Information shows that the prices of cattle, goats and sheep exhibited fluctuations in all breeds supplied at Pugu market last week after its supply slowed down.

According to the report, the prices for mature cattle female grade two (G2) increased by 5.9 per cent to 675,000/- from 635,000/- recorded in the previous week. But the prices for grade three (G3) female cattle recorded a 5.6 per cent decline to 445,000/- from 470,000/- of the previous market.



The prices for mature cattle male grade (G2) rose to 1005, 000/- in the week under review from 950,000/- recorded in the previous period, representing a 5.4 per cent increase.

The prices of the male cattle grade (G3) registered a 1.8 per cent increase to 713,000/- compared to 700,000/- of the previous month.


Meanwhile, the daily average sales of goats at the market declined to 315 from 225, which is equivalent to 28.6 per cent of the previous period.

The prices for mature female goat grade two (2) increased to 90,000/- from 70,000/- of the previous week, equivalent to 28 per cent. But the prices for female goats grade three (3) declined to 60,500/- from 55,000/-, which is 10 per cent decline.

Mature male goats grade two saw its prices falling by 36.8 per cent to 95,000/- from 130,000/- previously while male goats grade three recorded 13.3 per cent price decrease to 72,500/- from 64,000/- of the preceding marketing period.

Similarly, the average sales per market day for sheep recorded 15.9 per cent rise to 169 from 201 supplied in the week before.

The prices for mature female sheep grade (2) increased by 19.4 per cent to 80,000/- from 67,000/- , and female sheep grade (3) saw its prices appreciating by 22.2 per cent to 55,000/- compared to 45,000/- of the previous session.

The prices for mature male sheep grade (2) and grade (3) increased by 2.7 per cent and 16.7 per cent to 95,000/- from 92,500/- and 70,000/- from 60,000/-, respectively.
