CSC's Sisu upgraded as one of the top supercomputers in Europe

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 10 September 2014 Release date- 09092014 - The Finnish flagship supercomputer, Sisu, has undergone a major upgrade during August.

The size of the system has almost quadrupled and the processors have been upgraded to the brand new Intel Xeon E5 Haswell server processors, which were publically announced on September 8th. As a result Sisu's computing power increased by over 5 times from the first phase level, now exceeding the Petaflop class. Sisu is estimated to be the fastest supercomputer in the Nordics with its theoretical peak performance 1,7 Petaflops, equalling 1,7 quadrillion floating-point operations per second. Sisu will be taken in active use by Finnish and European researchers for instance in climate research, astrophysics, nanotechnology, material science, bio-science, fusion energy and renewable energy research.

'With Sisu the Finnish researchers have now world-class computing capacity needed for reaching scientific breakthroughs. It will increase the competiveness of our computational science and enable increased accuracy in simulations. It also demonstrates the Finland's target to be one of the leading countries in providing high-end computing capacity and related expertise for stimulating research', says Managing Director Kimmo Koski from CSC.

New Haswell processors inside CSC's Sisu supercomputer is among the first Cray XC systems in the world, which deploys new Haswell processor technology by Intel published this week.

When compared the current published Top500 listing of the world's top supercomputers (http://top500.org) the system would rank within the Top 30 in the world and in the Top 5 of academic systems in Europe. The official placement will be determined in mid-November when the next edition of the Top500 list will be released.

'This upgrade really demonstrates the good collaboration and skills of the specialists of all the parties involved. Thanks to this we are able to provide the researchers with access to this cutting-edge processor technology, literally from day one of its release', says development manager Olli-Pekka Lehto from CSC. 'The new processors are also over twice as energy-efficient. At this scale the annual power costs, and savings are hundreds of thousands of euros', Lehto continues.

'The upgrade of CSC's supercomputer Sisu is very exciting to Intel. As highly valued partners to Intel, we are very proud to work with CSC and Cray to bring such supercomputing resources to the Finnish and European research community', said Jorgen Forsberg, Nordic Enterprise Sales Director, Intel Corporation. 'Our new series of processors is the best performing technology available today and is the result of many years of development. We are very pleased to see CSC select our latest Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 series of processor for their new supercomputer'.

'CSC is one of the leading high performance computing centers in Europe, and we are honored that a Cray supercomputer continues to provide the international CSC user community with a powerful tool for enabling scientific innovations', said Barry Bolding, vice president of marketing and business development. 'Cray and CSC have built a collaborative partnership aimed at keeping the Finnish center at the forefront of supercomputing leadership in Europe, and we are pleased that Sisu is a key part of these efforts', says Barry Bolding, vice president of marketing and business development, Cray.
