Hamilton Mill tenants win at start-up competition [Dayton Daily News, Ohio]

(Dayton Daily News (OH) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 15--In the first year since changes were made to re-energize the former BizTech Center, the small business incubator's new tenants have gained regional recognition. Two tenants affiliated with the now-named Hamilton Mill have gained accolades in the burgeoning Cincinnati start-up community.

Perceptive Devices LLC won the RocketCode Web Development Award at the Cincinnati Innovates competition, held at the end of August, for its patent-pending Percept-D technology, according to the Mill's operators.

Uday Parshionikar founded Perceptive Devices LLC to develop computer technology for hands-free gestures. The technology controls electronic devices using gentle motions of the head and simple facial expression such as smiles.

First started from home offices in Mason, Parshionikar opened a business office in July at the High Street Hamilton small business incubator. Perceptive Devices will receive $5,000 in-kind for web development sponsored by Round Pixel Studio for its award.

Cincinnati Innovates is an innovation competition that is open to anyone who has an innovation, idea, or invention and has a greater Cincinnati connection. Parshionikar was one of five awardees recognized at the Sixth Annual Cincinnati Innovates Awards ceremony. Approximately $50,000 in awards are delivered to local entrepreneurs as part of the competition.

A second award winner at the startup competition, Lagoon, is also affiliated with The Hamilton Mill. Lagoon joined The Mill's tenant lineup earlier in 2014, but has since been accepted into the Brandery, a Cincinnati incubator. Lagoon is developing a water monitoring solution and application for homeowners and commercial property owners. They received $10,000 to go towards design and branding.

This year, the nonprofit Hamilton Mill is armed with a new mission -- to accelerate the growth of young companies with ideas for creating "highly commercializable products," and in particular, companies in the advanced manufacturing, clean technology and software sectors.

The Hamilton center was renamed this year, new performance measures are in place, and there's a new board chair at the helm. Chairman Rahul Bawa, of West Chester Twp., is volunteering his mentoring and other services at The Mill; is chief operating officer of Blue Chip Venture Co. in Cincinnati; chief executive officer of eMerge Health Solutions in Cincinnati; and is founder and chief executive officer of consulting firm PowerIT Solutions LLC.
