Humana Foundation Awards More than $1 Million to Local Charities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --(Business Wire)--

Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and the Humana Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, today announced the winners of the 2014 Humana Communities Benefit grant program, which is awarding each of the three nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations a multi-year grant totaling $350,000. Recipients of this year's grants - which will use the funds to promote healthy behaviors and healthy relationships in their communities - include PCC Community Wellness Center in Chicago, Morningside Ministries in San Antonio, and Starting Right, Now in Tampa Bay.

After more than a decade of offering the signature philanthropic program to nonprofits across the country, Humana increased each grant amount to $350,000, strengthening the transformational capacity of the grant and Humana's commitment to achieving healthier communities. More than 100 organizations applied and, following a competitive review process, three charities in each city were named finalists. The finalists posted video appeals online - also a first for the new program - and more than 100,000 votes were entered across the country. A final round of judging, which included finalist presentations to community leaders, decided the winning nonprofit in each city.

"We were delighted to have such a wonderful response from the community to our new Humana Communities Benefit platform this year," said Virginia Kelly Judd, Executive Director of the Humana Foundation. "As the Humana Foundation focuses on the importance of caring and supportive relationships and their role in improving health behaviors, we are thrilled to see the many ways nonprofits around the country are striving to make this idea a reality."

The 2014 recipients of the Humana Communities Benefit grant are:

  • PCC Community Wellness Center, a nonprofit that provides comprehensive healthcare and support services to low income residents living in Westside Chicago, will use the grant to create a sustainable urban farm and help feed and invigorate the community. The farm will showcase food production practices while providing training and employment opportunities for participants. With the support of the Humana Communities Benefit grant, PCC plans to spark a ripple of local, sustainable horticulture and healthy lifestyles into neighboring communities and towns throughout Chicago.
  • Morningside Ministries, San Antonio's oldest and largest nonprofit providing affordable retirement living for senios in need, will utilize the funding to expand its web-based training program, mmLearn.org. The revamped e-learning website provides caregivers throughout Texas, and across the U.S., an online support network with educational videos on topics such as nutrition and medication management programs, mental illness, senior exercise routines, and caregiver health. Caregivers also have the opportunity to interact personally with the presenters to address questions about administering care, issues facing those they care for, and topics related to caregiver health, like depression.
  • Starting Right, Now, a nonprofit focused on ending homelessness for unaccompanied youth in Hillsborough County, FL through one-on-one mentoring, will expand its current housing accommodations for teens and purchase a van to provide transportation for students to attend medical appointments and mentorship programs. Teens are paired with a caring adult who connects with them daily and tracks emotional and personal needs and acts as a resource and advocate.

The runners up include Family Alliance and Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance in Chicago; the San Antonio Food Bank and ChildSafe in San Antonio; and Sunrise of Pasco and Pinellas Education Foundation in Tampa Bay.

Since the original launch of the Humana Communities Benefit program in Chicago in 2003, the Humana Foundation has awarded more than $8 million to nonprofits in 11 communities nationwide. Previously, Humana Communities Benefit awarded one-time, $100,000 charitable grants to nonprofit winners. This year's grant recipients will receive a total of $350,000 each, provided in three installments over a three-year period. These multi-year grants seek to provide a transformational impact on the nonprofits and improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve.
