Humana Foundation Awards More than $1 Million to Local CharitiesLOUISVILLE, Ky. --(Business Wire)-- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and the Humana Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, today announced the winners of the 2014 Humana Communities Benefit grant program, which is awarding each of the three nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations a multi-year grant totaling $350,000. Recipients of this year's grants - which will use the funds to promote healthy behaviors and healthy relationships in their communities - include PCC Community Wellness Center in Chicago, Morningside Ministries in San Antonio, and Starting Right, Now in Tampa Bay. After more than a decade of offering the signature philanthropic program to nonprofits across the country, Humana increased each grant amount to $350,000, strengthening the transformational capacity of the grant and Humana's commitment to achieving healthier communities. More than 100 organizations applied and, following a competitive review process, three charities in each city were named finalists. The finalists posted video appeals online - also a first for the new program - and more than 100,000 votes were entered across the country. A final round of judging, which included finalist presentations to community leaders, decided the winning nonprofit in each city. "We were delighted to have such a wonderful response from the community to our new Humana Communities Benefit platform this year," said Virginia Kelly Judd, Executive Director of the Humana Foundation. "As the Humana Foundation focuses on the importance of caring and supportive relationships and their role in improving health behaviors, we are thrilled to see the many ways nonprofits around the country are striving to make this idea a reality."
