Beef Genetics Trade Trip to Uruguay Slated to Expand Market Opportunities

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HELENA, Mont., Sept. 17 -- The Montana Department of Agriculture issued the following news release: In the interest of continuing to grow and expand Montana's beef genetics industry, the Montana department of agriculture meats and livestock marketing officer Marty Earnheart will join producers Jack Holden of Holden Herefords and Kevin Mytty of Mytty Angus Ranch on a trade mission to Uruguay at the end of this month.

"I am very excited about the trip to Uruguay. They have a very strong cattle market right now and are progressive in their production practices. There is strong interest in American beef genetics and there is good potential for exports of semen and embryos. We have been fortunate to export some of our genetics down there and look forward to this trade mission to build on those relationships, expand our contacts, and also share our experience and expertise," said Jack Holden of Holden Herefords.

Uruguay recently eclipsed Argentina as the highest per capita consumer of beef and is becoming a leading producer in the region. The average annual production has increased 4 to 5 percent each year since 2010 and is poised to continue in 2015, with Uruguayan beef production forecast projected to increase to 620,000 tons carcass weight equivalent. The market growth bodes well for Montana's beef genetics industry, embryos, semen, and breeder cows, which has been expanding in recent years.

"Beef producers around the world are figuring out that Montana has some of the highest quality beef genetics on the market. We have had successful trips to Russia, Kazakhstan, Argentina, and recently South Africa. This trip provides our beef genetics industry the opportunity to again showcase the work done by our beef producers," said Director Ron de Yong.

The trip is scheduled to leave September 25 and return October 6. It will be funded through grants awarded to the department by U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE). USLGE is a not-for-profit, nationwide trade association that represents the international marketing interests of the dairy, beef, sheep, swine, and horse breeding industries.

"Getting our boots on the ground in a new market is always exciting and educational. When our producers get to meet their counterparts in other countries, it can really move trade opportunities forward. We are looking forward to expanding opportunities in this region," said Earnheart.

The Montana Department of Agriculture's mission is to protect producers and consumers, and to enhance and develop agriculture and allied industries. For more information on the Montana Department of Agriculture, visit agr.mt.gov.
